Having read “The Horror at Red Hook” for myself, I certainly agree that it’s Lovecraft’s most overtly racist story. I’ll discuss the problems I found in the story below, but I did find it useful partly because it gave me important insights into what LaValle is doing in his novella, but also because the final scenes of the story do contain excellent nightmarish imagery. I found Lovecraft’s story to be a frustrating but worthwhile read. Because the tale’s reputation preceded it, I opted out of reading it until I learned about Victor LaValle’s The Ballad of Black Tom and decided I needed to read Lovecraft’s tale before I read LaValle’s novella. Lovecraft’s most notoriously racist story, and although you can easily find it online, it often gets left out of Lovecraft’s “Best Of” collections these days. The detective discovers that Suydam is the leader of a cult and the story climaxes with Malone witnessing a scene of human sacrifice and Lovecraftian carnage. The recluse has been involved in shadowy dealings with gangsters and other criminals operating in the slums of the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The protagonist of the story is Detective Malone, who investigates a series of kidnappings linked to a mysterious recluse named Suydam. Lovecraft that first appeared in the January 1927 issue of Weird Tales. It’s a chance for fans to check out the foundation of Call of Cthulhu and see why it’s been the the gold standard in horror gaming for 40 years.“The Horror at Red Hook” is a short story by H.P. Chaosium is reprinting the original edition of Call of Cthulhu and the Society is creating authentic documents for the cases within the classic book. The next step in the partnership was funded by Kickstarter earlier this year. Reading through everything made me fall in love with the story once again. After looking at the props contained in this box, I can t imagine not using the ones from the H.P. I’ve run it a few times now and have gotten compliments on how professional they look. I’ve spent a lot of time producing my own props for this campaign. There’s even an artifact inside, but spoilers prevent discussing it in too much detail. The interview transcripts have been recorded by professional voice actors. Instead of just listing the books that Jackson Elias wrote, there’s a dust jacket for one that can be slipped over a hardcover and handed to an investigator. There are additional elements that add to the immersion. Inside the box are half a dozen file folders seperated by location with all the letters, diaries and photographs done up like they’re ready to be filmed. Every document in the entire campaign has been reproduced down to the crumples in the clippings. The Masks of Nyarlathotep Gamer Prop Set is the first result of this partnership.
